UNP leader, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, has appointed Milinda Moragoda as the organizer for Colombo West in addition to his present responsibilities as the organizer for Colombo East. The decision to place both Colombo East and West under Mr. Moragoda organizationally recreates the former Colombo South electorate which was represented jointly by Mr. J.R. Jayewardene and Mr. Bernard Soysa from 1960 up until 1977. After Colombo South was split up in the delimitation carried out in 1977, Jayewardene was returned as Member of Parliament for Colombo West and Mr. Samarawickrema for Colombo East.
The first act of the Colombo South organization (the newly joined Colombo East and West organizations) was for its members to engage in a work programme to help clear some places of religious worship and dwellings in the Tsunami affected Matara Fort. The UNP Members and members of the JVP Sahana Seva Balakaya were seen working side by side at this location. The Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the United National Party, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe visited the location and inspected the work being done. Preceding the work programme, the Venerable Kottugoda Dhammawasa, Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Sanga Sabawa chief Secretary delivered a sermon to the representatives from the newly created Colombo South organization at the Matara Kotuwa Dharmaramaya Vihara. In his sermon, Venerable Kottugoda Dhammawasa stressed the need for national unity, social solidarity and a change in the political culture. |
