It was reported in "The Island" of 16.07.2009 that the new Minister of Justice, Hon. Milinda Moragoda will meet the president to discuss the re-introduction of the death penalty. The move is a very intelligent and a timely move considering the increasing rate of crimes in the island.


The government decided to implement capital punishment in 2004 after the assassination of High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya, but we have not seen any one being executed even after Ambepitiya’s brutal assassination.


However, this should not be delayed any longer.
