Justice Minister Milinda Moragoda informed parliament yesterday that 1213 prisoners had died since 2000 till July 13 this year.


Asked about steps taken for the safety of prison inmates, Mr. Moragoda said special advice had been given to the superintendents and assistant superintendents to control escape attempts.


The patrols have also been increased in and around prisons especially during nights.


The minister said that disciplinary action had been taken against officers responsible for the escape of prisoners.


He said that relevant officials had been instructed through circulars on action to be taken during escape attempts by inmates.


“Prompt attention should be given to prisoners needing medical treatment,” he said.
