(by Hiran H.Senewiratne)

Discipline, dedication and self respect are key ingredients to go up in the ladder for any profession in the country. Therefore, these qualities should be inculcated in minds of everybody, Justice and Law Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda said.

The Minister speaking at the 93rd passing out ceremony of prison guards held at the Welikada Prison Grounds yesterday said prison guards played an important role during the war times and their job has become equally important like three security forces and police.

More than 150 new male and female jail guards passed out after three months training in two training centers in Mihintale and Welikada. The Ministry is taking action to improve the standards of prisons and prison guards, he said. Minister Moragoda said he had visited several prisons in the country and is looking forward to improving prison houses to international standards.

He will also support Prison Commissioner Major General V.R. Silva's endeavours to promote education, training and development of prison guards in all prisons in the country.

They hope to launch a refresher program for prison guards like for other forces in the country.

The prison guards will also be given on-the-job training to enhance and lift their morale and moral values including discipline, dedication and self respect, he said.
