The Milinda Moragoda Institute has initiated a Tamil language training course, free of charge for the police officers in the Colombo DIG’s Division.

The duration of the course is six months. It is basically targets police officers who man the inquiry desks at police stations and those deployed on security duty as it will enable them to have better rapport with the Tamil-speaking people in the city.

Inspector General of Police, Jayantha Wickramaratne who met Minister Milinda Moragoda at a ceremony to hand over computers and photocopy machines to OIC’s of police stations in Colombo East and Colombo West, stressed on the value of a knowledge of the Tamil language to police officers, especially those working in the predominately Tamil-speaking areas in the city.

The Minister promised the IGP that he would help him in this initiative and instructed his officials to immediately to work out a program in collaboration with the police. Launched within a short period of time, this is another invaluable service of the Milinda Moragoda Institute.

Chief Secretary General of the Amarapura Sanga Sabawa, Ven. Brahmanawatte Sivali thera, addressing the launching ceremony in Tamil emphasized on the value of the Tamil language and how it could restore harmony and better understanding between the two main communities - Sinhala and Tamil.

“This will also go a long way in resolving the ongoing conflict”, the prelate noted.
