Prisons to get phone jammers

High-tech equipment will be imported to jam mobile phones in prisons.

An investigation by Ministry of Justice and Law Reforms has revealed that murders and robberies are committed with the use of mobile phones in prisoners’ hands and dangerous criminals kept in high security enclosures instruct their accomplices living outside to carry out criminal activities on their behalf.

Recently a narcotics dealer in prison called the Deputy Minister of Justice V. Puthrasigamoney asking why his release was delayed. The Deputy Minister refused to answer the prisoner’s query.

The Deputy Minister said he was sure that the call had originated from a mobile phone and a prison official would have given his telephone number to the prisoner.

Puthrasigamoney said discussions were being held with Minister Milinda Moragoda and jamming of mobile phones would be effected shortly to sever links between prisoners and the outside world.

Steps were also being taken to install equipment to conduct checks on prison guards and prisoners returning from courts, the deputy minister said.
