Steps will be taken to relocate the Bambalapitiya Children's Court and the Training School for Youth Offenders within 45 days on a directive issued on November 10 by Justice and Law Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda.
A ministerial sub-committee will be appointed for the purpose of overseeing the relocation of the Children's Court which will be funded by 'Save the Children'.
Following the recommendations of the committee appointed by the Minister to review juvenile law system reforms, the Bambalapitiya Children's Court will be shifted to Battaramulla and the Pallansena Training School to the existing rehabilitation centre in Ambepussa. The Committee, chaired by Supreme Court Judge, Justice Shiranee Tilakawardene, highlighted in its report the need to revise certain provisions of children's law, especially The Children and Young Persons Ordinance No. 48 of 1939, which deals with legal system implementation for child rights. |
