Reforms are to be introduced to Sri Lanka’s Family Laws pertaining to General Law, Kandyan Law and some aspects of the Thesawalami and Muslim Personal Law, the Justice Ministry said yesterday.
A committee appointed by Justice and Law Reform Minister Milinda Moragoda to consider reforms to Sri Lanka’s Family Laws presented its report recently.
It had identified priority areas which needed reforms in the General and Personal Laws governing family relations in Sri Lanka.
The Committee noted in its preface to the report that laws should reflect common legal values relating to the family which is an important institution in Sri Lanka.
The Minister had requested the Justice Ministry to take whatever steps necessary to implement the committee recommendations.
Meanwhile the Justice Ministry hopes to set up a legal information centre for litigants, lawyers, academics and other interested parties to obtain necessary information related to the administration of justice in Sri Lanka.
The Committee comprised Chairperson Savitri Gunasekera, Appeal Court Judge K.T. Chithrasiri, Justice Ministry consultant Hiranthi Wijemanne, Counsel Nihal Jayamanne and Maxwell Bastiansz, Plan Implementation Ministry Secretary Dhara S. Wijayatilake, Sharya Scharenguivel and Deepika Udagama of the Law Faculty. |
