Sri Lanka: Justice and Law Reforms Minister meets his Dutch Counterpart

Milinda Moragoda Minister of Justice and Law Reforms of Sri Lanka met with Minister of Justice of The Netherlands, E.M.H. Hirsch Ballin at the Ministry of Justice in The Hague.


This meeting was part of an initiative to establish close cooperation between the two countries in the spheres of justice and the judiciary and to develop a medium and long-term strategy in this regard.   Sri Lanka and The Netherlands share a tradition of Roman Dutch Law.


During this meeting the two ministers discussed the possibility of establishing a framework for cooperation between the two countries which would include capacity-building and training for judges, prosecutors, prison officials, etc. In addition, the Minister briefed his counterpart on the challenges Sri Lanka faces in the post-conflict environment and discussed possible support from The Netherlands for the Ministry’s programme with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to rehabilitate former LTTE cadres.

Recently, Minister Moragoda had a similar dialogue with his British counterpart, Secretary of Justice Jack Straw when he visited London.
