e-Sri Lanka must benefit rural population –Milinda

(by Brian Tissera)

Improvements in technology are welcome and in fact is the objective of e-Sri Lanka. However it is important that these innovations and development benefit the lives of our rural population, be they farmers of Polonnaruwa or fishermen of Mullathivu, Minister of Economic Reforms, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda said at the launch of the Ericsson Metropolitan, “ Mobility, IP and beyond” on Tuesday at the Hilton Colombo.

Speaking further, Moragoda said that we have to keep a apace with developments around us and improvement must help us to get up. e-Sri Lanka must serve as a channel that will help the whole country move towards a better quality of life.

The Regional Business Director for Ericsson Prem Kumar Menon, introducing the new state-of-the-art-technology under the theme of “Mobility, IP and beyond” said that the new system MD 110 PABX system enables people to be reachable at any place at any time.

Contactability is affected through a mobile phone but provides many more facilities than just voice contact. The user of the mobile phone will be integrated into the corporate network, without geographical restrictions.

The mobile extension is more than call forwarding. It becomes an extension of the MD 110 and services such as short number dialling, camp-on, instruction, call-back, conference, etc., all work for both the mobile users as well as the other MD 110 users.

When calls are made by mobile users, they would call the Ericsson MD 110 PABX access number to get the dial tone and then make their calls as usual on a digital desktop telephone. The solution can also be enhanced with the virtual private network (VPN) service that can handle all prefix dialing, Menon added.
