UNP meets to discuss reforms

The decision making working committee of the UNP will meet today to discuss proposed reforms to the party constitution, party sources said yesterday.

These reforms proposed by the party’s ”Moderate Group” led by MP Milinda Moragoda following the recent leadership struggle would be discussed at length, the sources said adding that more would be known on the motion to impeach the Chief Justice.

The “Moderate Group” proposed what they described as urgent reforms that were needed to further democratize the party. They proposed the formation of a “Council” from the National Executive Committee to appoint a leader for a determined period. But some have opposed these reforms, the sources said.

The UNP leader and the leader of the “Moderate Group” were yesterday scheduled to return home from Chennai where they held talks with the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
