Former Minister Milinda Moragoda highlighted the importance of open economic policies in order to balance cost effectiveness in today’s globalized environment at the branching out of the “Listening Campaign” to the Kegalle district.

Addressing villagers in Budhamawatte, Kiriwellapitiya and Embulgasdeniya, the subjects that were addressed ranged from economic policy to the political arena in the country.

He said, “the previous government had a vision to make Sri Lanka the gateway into the Indian Subcontinent so that local and foreign investors and entrepreneurs would have access to a larger market and could produce products on a mass scale.”

Speaking of the Constitution Mr. Moragoda said, “before we make any changes the reason to do so should be carefully considered, Constitutions are not meant to be tampered with cavalierly, yet sadly we have had a history of political parties who opportunistically rewrite constitutions for their own purposes.”

Mr. Moragoda added that Constitutions should be drawn after deep thought and should reflect the country’s history, culture and society. “Unlike in India where even a school child can explain the vision behind their constitutions, I doubt if our school children or the average adult would understand our Constitution,” said Mr. Moragoda.

The former Minister of Foreign Employment Welfare, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Member of Parliament for Kegalle, A.D. Premadasa joined the former Minister at these discussions.
