Minister visits Thai production villages

Milinda Moragoda, Minister of Economic Reform, Science and Technology who was in Thailand for the peace talks, visited several villages in the north of Thailand to inspect productions.

These villages were set up according to Thai Prime Minister Thakshin Shinawathra’s ‘One village one product’ concept.  Villagers are jointly involved in productions such as weaving cloth, handicrafts, gem cutting, animal husbandry and mushroom cultivation and are said to be earning well.

The Minister hopes to introduce this concept to Sri Lanka and make the small industries a profit earning sector.

Agriculture, animal husbandry and tourism, in Thailand take place on a large scale.

The ‘One village one product’ concept was introduced to help industrialists facing difficulties due to rising production costs and the extremely competitive market place.  Director General Peace Secretariat Bernard Goonetilleke accompanied the Minister on this visit.
