Milinda Moragoda who is contesting as a Colombo district UNP candidate at the forthcoming general election, said that he would not be a part of the poster campaign but would fight the election in accordance with the election laws. He has decided to set aside those funds for the welfare of the needy.

Accordingly, he has already donated ten wheel-chairs and a passenger lift to the Mallika Elders Home at Bambalapitiya at a cost of Rs.50,000. He has donated ten wheel-chairs, ten boilers and a stock of Glucometers to the Kalubowila Hospital, and Rs.50,000 to the Sri Jayawardenapura “Suhanda” Children’s Home for the purchase of a computer.

According to election laws, it is an offence to display posters in public places after the day of nominations. Moragoda is of the view that candidates who are contesting to enter the parliament to work for the development of the country should first work according to the laws and not waste funds.

Poster campaigns lead to unnecessary brawls and altercations. Friends become enemies, resulting in supporters getting involved in arguments and fights. These campaigns actually do not help the candidate in anyway, he said.

In a statement issued, he says that his intention is to fight the election in a justifiable manner and not to be engaged in unlawful activities that have become the normal pattern at elections.

A candidate has to spend an enormous amount on printing, pasting and entertaining the so-called supporters. He asks whether it is not better if that amount of money is spent on the electorate for which one is contesting. “Someone should give the lead and I am going to do it”.
