Minister Milinda Moragoda and G.L. Peiris yesterday assured the Goverment’s fullest commitment and support to implement a host of recommendations that came out of the three-day conference on financial reforms.
Minister Moragoda reiterated that the Government alone cannot take the reform initiative forward but private sector must support it by educating the people.
“Connect closer to the people and explain the need for and benefits of reforms. Show results and let them touch and feel it”, he said.
Minister Moragoda also said that both the politicians and private sector have lost credibility hence need to show results sooner than later as people would lose patience.
He also called on the private sector to forget parochial differences and personality issues within them and work unitedly with politicians in the national interest. He also noted that private sector politics at times was greater than that of politicians.
Minister Peiris said that the Government understands the dire need for reforms and deregulation, which would enhance the scope for human initiatives.
He said that over-regulation means discretion, which leads to corruption and noted that arrogance on the part of those who enforce regulations and political interference are other problems.
“The Government is fully committed to implement the suggested reforms both at the financial sector forum and the deregulation forum held at Marawila”, Prof. Peiris added.
Conference organisers the Development and Review Committee on Financial Reforms of the Advisory Council for Industry and Sri Lanka Association of Security Analysts (SLASIA) also assured that the recommendations would be documented and presented to the Government and would lobby for and monitor their implementation. |
