Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday led a government delegation for talks with President Chandrika Kumaratunga in Janadhipathi Mandiraya where they discussed a range of issues relating to the peace process and the proposed establishment of a Finance Commission, political sources said. Ministers Milinda Moragoda and K.N. Choksy accompanied the Prime Minister while the President was assisted by her nominee for the peace process and former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.
Meanwhile the Presidential Secretariat last night said that the President and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, accompanied by Ministers Choksy and Moragoda and officials, held a meeting on the 21st instant to discuss matters relating to the provision of funds for the Provincial Councils, especially with regard to implementation of proposals for educational reforms. Later, at a separate meeting, the President and Prime Minister, accompanied by Minister Moragoda and Lakshman Kadirgamar discussed developments relating to the ongoing talks between the government and the LTTE and other matters of national concern. The President inquired, in particular, whether any progress was being made on the formulation of a constitutional framework for the resolution of issues regarding the structure of the state. These questions will be further discussed. |
