Adhere to no-poster campaign, call by Milinda

“Candidates who intend to become law-makers should not begin by breaking laws, trying to put-up posters after nominations are given,” observed former UNP MP Milinda Moragoda at the inauguration ceremony of the “Milinda Moragoda Institute of People’s Empowerment” at the New Town Hall yesterday in Colombo.

He said that he would set an example by strictly adhering to a no-poster campaign during this election and added that if other candidates followed suit it would avoid clashes within and outside political parties.

He urged all candidates from all political parties to make use of the print and electronic media as provided by law to canvass for the forthcoming election. Mr. Moragoda said elections are meant at this crucial hour to decide the future of the people and the country and not for politicians to clash and further deteriorate the law and order situation.

He stressed the need to establish a new political culture proposed by the UNP to give a new look to the society from January 1, 2002 when the new parliament meets in session. Therefore, he urged all political parties to shun violence and stop mud slinging in order to concentrate on bringing peace and development to this crisis-ridden nation.

Instead of making the city walls ugly by pasting posters, Moragoda proposed that candidates should meet the people and tell them what the candidates have in their minds for the people and the country. (PG)
